We are delighted that 2016 has proven to be yet another busy year and it seems we'll be seeing more of the same for 2017, with little evidence of a post-Brexit slowdown.

In response, we have invested heavily again. You will already be aware of the two new laser cutters installed over the past couple of years and we have now focussed on the IT infrastructure with the implementation of a new integrated ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution. The full replacement installation will take a while but it promises to revolutionise many of the current cumbersome processes.

You will also see from the articles below that we have expanded the number of spray bays and opened a new customer inspection bay. We hope this dedicated facility will prove invaluable to our customer base.

To keep these e-mail newsletters to a minimum, we will be posting relevant news on our website and social media sites facebook icon twitter icon linkedin icon. We would encourage you to follow us to keep up-to-date with all the latest developments.

As always, the team here wish you well and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes

Don-Bur To Attend The CV Show 2017

Next year, the Commercial Vehicle Show will be held from the 25th to the 27th April at the familiar Birmingham NEC halls.

The CV Show has proven to be a worthwhile launching pad for some of Don-Bur's more innovative and exciting product developments and they will again be seen showing off the latest technologies on stand 5A50.

Veolia Dropsider Curtainsided Trailer

Veolia Order Dropsider Curtainsiders

Used in their hazardous waste division, these tri-axle pillarless curtainsiders were fitted with 4 drop-down boards per side for additional lateral load restraint capability. Don-Bur's own 'LoadFix' bungee load restraint system was also fitted for full DVSA compliance and peace of mind.

Additional features include stowage for a fire extinguisher and two storage boxes fitted O/S and N/S.

Trailer Efficiency Rating

Don-Bur Working Toward Accredited Energy Efficiency Ratings

The transport industry is well-known for being cynical with its response to claims from various manufacturers about the latest fuel saving 'widget'.

For many years, Don-Bur has been trying to overcome this apprehension by openly publishing real-world operator data about fuel consumption and savings on CO2. As a further step to underline their transparency, Don-Bur are the first trailer manufacturer to work with the LowCVP (Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership) to achieve an accredited Energy Efficiency Rating carried out in accord with Vecto guidelines.

As illustrated, Don-Bur intends to demonstrate, not only the fuel consumption, but the energy efficiency for both weight or volume limited operations.

This new rating will assure potential buyers of efficiency potential and offer the ability to compare credible results across the industry without having to carry out expensive independent trials.

Will The Longer Semi-Trailer Trial Be Extended?

Don-Bur recently spoke to Philip Martin, Head of Policy Branch at the DfT, to clarify the current position on the Longer Semi Trailer (LST) trial which started in January 2012 with 1,800 allocations. Almost 5 years on, the trial is in full swing with virtually all allocations fulfilled within approximately 160 operators; however, industry rumours have arisen about a potential trial "extension" and we wanted to set the records straight ...more

Grundon Double Deck

Grundon Waste Management Bodywork

Don-Bur has recently completed the manufacture of some fixed double deck trailers for Grundon Waste Management. Both types come with an internal tail-lift to the swan neck area for easy loading and a sloped roof design for increased aerodynamic efficiency.

Of particular note was the 10.15m tandem axle urban delivery design. At 4.86m tall and sitting low on 215/75 R17.5 wheels, it also sported an impressive 2500kg capacity tail-lift with a huge 4.050m long platform. This enabled 8 large waste bins to be lifted/lowered at a time. The trailers also carried on-board batteries to allow the tail-lift to operate independently.

Virtual Reality

New Virtual Reality Service

Particularly with new vehicle types, developing and refining a trailer or rigid bodywork specification requires careful consideration. Wouldn't it be convenient if you inspect the final product before we start cutting and welding metal? Wouldn't it be handy if you can stand inside a trailer to assess every aspect before we order materials? Virtual Reality (VR) can do just that and Don-Bur are now offering this service... more

Allied Bakeries Teardrop

Allied Bakeries Tops Up Teardrop Fleet

Allied Bakeries have received another 26 Teardrops to add to their aerodynamic fleet which now totals over 300 of the iconic design. Running at 4.296m high, these tri-axle box van trailers have a rear aperture of 2.140 (7' 1/4") and are fitted with impressive full colour printed livery, produced at Don-Bur's own graphics division, Sapphire.

Unusually, the flooring was specified with Bakadek aluminium plank incorporating low friction strips which allows stacked bread trays to slide effortlessly from back to front and vice versa rather than having to use more conventional bread trolleys.

Trailer Innovation

The Latest Trailer Innovation 2016

Over the past decade, trailer innovation has accelerated in response to ever more demanding requirements from clientele wanting greater load capacity, faster turnaround at the bay, improved aerodynamic efficiency and less unladen weight. Safety too has played a key role in the development of new features to eliminate or reduce risk wherever possible ...more

Pedro Pets Foods

32T 8x2 Rigid For Pedro Petfoods

It's not often we see a 32T chassis to build on and this Volvo FH 460 Globetrotter tridem, fitted with a curtainsided body, was an impressive sight. The 7.9m long body was specified with a heavy-duty 28mm Keruing hardwood floor and a 2500kg cantilever tail-lift.

With the finished vehicle weighing in at a smidge over 13 tonnes unladen, Pedro Petfoods can carry up to 18.9 tonnes of payload.

IRTE Conference

Don-Bur Asked Back To Industry Conferences

Don-Bur has recently presented at 2 recognised conferences in the industry, the IRTE Annual Conference & the FTA Fleet Engineers Conference. The topic of discussion at both conferences centred on trailer/bodywork innovation and aerodynamics in the industry.

The topic for discussion at the IRTE Annual Conference was "Vehicle weight, profile and aerodynamics: the true story". The 30 minute slot explored the relative merits of all sides of the argument and the impact this can have on your fuel economy and holistic efficiency in operation.

Don-Bur also presented at the FTA Fleet Engineers Conference, where the focus was on Trailer & Bodybuilding Innovation. Notable features included the development of Plasma Actuators and Don-Bur’s cab gap solution, ‘Aeris’.

Inspection Bay

New Spray Facilities & Inspection Bay

In the last year, Don-Bur has invested in a new, dedicated inspection bay. With controlled access, the clean, white-walled area with inspection pit provides the perfect environment for customers to check and test final products. Conveniently, there is also a bolt-on customer office with free wi-fi to write up reports or catch up on e-mails.

The old inspection bay has now been transformed into another spray bay which will alleviate pressure on that department and improve production capacity.

EN 12642-XL

EN 12642 Under Review

BS EN 12642 : 2006, the European load containment standard including both "L" and "XL" levels is under review.

Currently drafted as CEN prEN12642, the aim of the revision is to "update the test methods as well as marking and certification of vehicle body structures that are able to take up a part of the forces to secure the cargo. Due to the particular cargo and the body type additional securing of cargo can become necessary and should be determined in the concrete case by the shipper, the operator or the driver." ...more

Lowe Refrigeration

Draw-Bar De-Mounts for Lowe Refrigeration

An large order for Lowe Refrigeration has been completed which included a number of individual builds to include chassis installations, draw-bar trailers and both curtainsided and box van de-mountable bodies.

Interestingly, the 7.5m long curtainsider bodies had a maximum 4m overall height for continental work whilst the 4.3m high box van bodies were destined for UK deliveries only.

Don-Bur now have a long history of de-mount solutions and were given a clean slate to design these straight-lift systems to provide the easiest and most robust operation.

Online Chat Proves To Be A Popular Tool

Since the launch of the Don-Bur online chat tool in February 2016, a total of 6,192 messages to date have bounced backwards and forwards between online visitors and trained Don-Bur staff. The popularity of the free feature is a key indicator of how many individuals prefer to communicate and Don-Bur will continue to develop and support the service.

Not only are visitors able to text-chat with live operators, transferring website links, reference photographs and documents is a breeze which is a significant advantage for rapid illustration purposes. Users also appreciate the ability to print or save transcripts for future reference.

With an average 15 second wait time and an average individual chat time of 11 minutes and 45 seconds, Don-Bur manages to respond to 96% of all chat requests during office hours.

David Burton, Managing Director at Don-Bur comments "Improved technology is changing communication preferences. Most of our customers lead busy lifestyles and although telephone calls are instant, there is no documented trail to follow at a later time. We've noticed a significant increase in the use of e-mails over the past decade and the response to the new online chat reinforces the fact that many prefer to have time to consider and save written responses. Once again, we are delighted to be leading the market and providing added value."
