"Freight Best Practice confirms that an accepted methodology has been used in these calculations. For information on how to reduce your fuel consumption and CO2 emissions please see www.freightbestpractice.org.uk"
This free on-line form instantly calculates the litres of fuel (diesel or petrol) consumed, cost and resultant CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions of your private car, commercial vehicle or fleet of vehicles. Simply enter the information into the highlighted light yellow left column and click "Calculate". (* minimum required fields). Comma's should not be used to denote thousands.
The fields in the pale green column allow you to carry out comparisons. The "Standard Vehicle" column should contain the base standard vehicle data whilst the "Comparison Vehicle" column can be used to calculate an increase or reduction in efficiency in comparison to the Standard Vehicle. If capital purchase costs are submitted, you will also be provided with the approximate payback period (i.e. the period taken to offset the fuel saving against the cost of achieving those fuel savings)
*1 Gallon (Imperial) = 4.54609188 ltrs. 1 Mile = 1.609344 kms. Miles/Gallon (Imp) - Kms/Litre conversion = 0.354006. Litres/100km - kms/Litre conversion = 1/(Ltrs per 100km /100). Diesel:CO2 conversion of 2.63 kgs (0.00263 tonnes) per litre. Petrol:CO2 conversion of 2.315 kgs (0.00231 tonnes) per litre. Whilst CO2 is directly proportional to litreage consumed, NOx and particulate emissions vary depending on engine and exhaust management systems.
**It is roughly estimated that a tree will absorb 1100kgs of CO2 in its lifetime; however, these figures are highly speculative and relate to the genus, location and age of the tree. DEFRA recommend the purchase of CER's (Certified Emission Reduction credits) or VER's (Voluntary Emissions Reduction credits) as part of their code of practice. An investment in CER's or VER's from accredited providers may be used in a number of ways by that provider to offset your CO2 emissions.
